Whoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behavior, but the cute script turns the tables and shows how the latter energizes the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh

- I didn't expect to like this movie when my husband brought it home one Friday night - but I was wrong, wrong, wrong. It's hilarious, uplifting, and entertainint.Goldberg plays a Reno casino singer who gets in trouble with the mob and hides out disguised as a nun in a teaching convent. Maggie Smith, every twitch and blink in place, plays the mother superior who must cope with Goldberg's high jinks as she energises the convent, its choir, its students, and her own life. And, omigod! The music! You'll want the soundtrack when you've finished watching the movie.A feel good movie to die for.

-A Kid's ReviewWhat can I say? This is quite possibly the best movie I have ever seen, and I'm sure I'm not the only one saying this. The story is about a Reno lounge singer named Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) whose singing career is going straight down the toilet. But that's before the fateful night when Deloris witnesses her married mobster boyfriend, Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel), viciously murder an unloyal employee. She then runs to the police, where they ask her to testify against Vince, but she knows he'll come after her when she does. The police then tell her that they can stash her in the safest place on Earth if she testifies--a convent. Deloris reluctantly agrees, but quickly finds that the convent is no place for a loud Reno lounge singer. But just when it can't get any worse, Deloris discovers the horrible, out-of-synch Sunday choir, and soon realizes she was destined to stumble into this convent. The cast is brilliant; the hilarious Kathy Najimy stars as the bouncy, always-cheerful Sister Mary Patrick; Wendy Makkena as the awfully shy Sister Mary Robert; Mary Wickes as the spunky, wise-cracking Sister Mary Lazarus, and of course, the legendary Maggie Smith as the ever-stern, yet caring, Reverend Mother. And these aren't the only colorful characters; every nun has their own special personality. And finally, the essential piece of the Sister Act puzzle, music. Every song performed by the sisters will leave you clapping your hands and wanting more. These include "Hail Holy Queen", "My God", and of course, the famous "I Will Follow Him" finale. There are also catchy, modern songs included in the soundtrack, as well. In other words, if you like the movie, you'll like the music. As for the plot, in my opinion it's very original and interesting. I have to admit it did slow down a couple of times, but for the most part it was convincing and, to me, very well-written. Overall, this movie is one the entire family can enjoy and watch over and over again. And when it comes to the bare necessities of a picture, there's "nun too many" or "nun too few" here!

- I can't be torn apart from my God!!!!,
Nothing you can buy could make me tell a lie to my God! This is Whoopi's best movie ever! My cousin and I were constantly singing the songs everywhere we went. One my favorite movies of ALL time. I wish they would come out with a DVD that contained more extra features though.

- I grew up watching Sister Act in the 1990s. Although that time has passed, I still get drawn into it. It hasn't faded. Sister Act has an irresistible charm that is seemingly inescapable. Why, you ask? After all, the storyline seems so simple - Whoopi Goldberg is Deloras van Cartier, a struggling Vegas lounge singer. One night she witnesses her boyfriend Vince and his men commit a murder. She escapes and heads to the police, who inform her that Vince is a mob boss they've been trying to put away for some time. But, any witness they have "disappears" (aka dies) before they can testify. Deloras, who was unaware of this fact, realizes that Vince will kill her if he has to, to prevent her from testifying. But Detective Eddie Souther (Bill Nunn) has another plan, hide Deloras in the one place Vince won't look: a convent. Deloras must pose as a nun in order to avoid being killed and while she's there, many changes take place. What lies the key to this movie's success first off is the casting. Whoopi accurately combines comedy and drama here. She can be downright hilarious at times, such as when she's first put into the nun's robes. But she can also be emotional. For instance, during one of her many talks with the Reverand Mother (Maggie Smith) she tries to explain what they could do to make Mass more lively. Maggie Smith is perfectly cast. She counterbalances Deloras' antics as the head of the order. Initially she's apprehensive and irritated with Deloras'; but that begins to change. Kathy Najimy plays Sister Mary Patrick (the Happy Nun) and makes her character shine. Other notables are shy Sister Mary Roberts and the sarcastic Sister Mary Lazarus, who are both played by Wendy Makkena and Mary Wickes respectfully. Another great thing about this film are how the characters progress. Deloras steadily influences the Church and in turn the Sisters influence her as well. Watching this is what makes it memorable. Seeing Deloras help the nuns with their failing choir and succeed always brings a smile to my face. Their performances at Mass are wonderful - all the women did a lovely job singing. (Aside from Makkena, who's vocals were sung by Andrea Robinson). But the pinnacle is the grand finale "I Will Follow Him" that the choir sings for the Pope. There's so much emotion in their voices. It makes for a performance that is unforgettable. Deloras' dramatic conversation with the Reverand Mother is another such moment. The Reverand Mother was intially afraid of sending the Sisters outside the Church walls as the neighbourhood had become too dangerous. But, in doing this, she had forgotten her promise as a nun: to help others that were in need, even if they weren't of the Faith. Initially, she is sceptical of Deloras' "radical" ideas. But, she soon realizes that they're helping others by fixing up the neighbourhood and showing generosity - instead of being shut away from the world. In turn Deloras is changed as well - she grows to respect the Sisters and how they live their lives. In the end she's shown as a much calmer person, who isn't afraid of anything that Vince may do to her. This is in stark contrast to the beginning where she's scared for her life. The comedic moments give lots of laughs: especially when you see a bunch of nuns in a casino trying to "blend in" (trust me it will make sense when you see it) or when Deloras tries to say Grace and messes up. In short, there are so many great moments that I can scarce write them all down. You'd better check this one out for yourself. Enjoy.

- What a classic. I don't really like Goldberg but she was great in this movie. I loved her quirky personality and her no nonsense attitude. Something I noticed in the movie was that when Delores went to the police station in the beginning she tells the detectives that she overheard Vince say to Joey, "say goodnight joey" . But Delores barged in AFTER Vince said it and right when he shot Joey. So I was wondering how she could know that? Other than that, I absolutely loved this movie. The singing nuns were fun and I love how Vince's cronies change in the end and can't shoot her and how Delores and Reverend Mother seemed to have mended their differences. Vince was a snake, though. I hated that he used Delores AND he gave her his wife's fur coat! I don't care that it WAS purple mink. How tacky is that? Definitely a keeper!

- Appealed To The Masses,I enjoyed this when it came out, just as millions of other folks did. It had a nice feel to it, good humor, great music and it didn't offend, from believer to atheist. It even had some action scenes. Many movies which combine genres (i.e. action and comedy) wind up successes. It's not a bad formula.
Although Whoopi Goldberg is the undeniable star of this movie, Kathy Najimy as "Sister Mary Patrick" almost steals the show as the bubbly nun. However, always a sucker for a pretty and wholesome face, I preferred Mary Wickes as "Sister Mary Lazarus." She had this shy countenance to her before blossoming with her voice. Maybe that's why she had the name Lazarus as her personality rose from the dead.

- Was in the 11th grade when this movie came out and I should add that this was and is still a great Whoopi Goldberg film, amongst others. Must see

- Whoopi: "ARRRGHHH I LOOK LIKE A PENGUIN!!", LOVE Sister Act, a brilliant movie. Clever and funny and so good at chearing you up when you are down! You cannot watch this movie and not smile! Brilliant!
Vegas singer Delores (Whoopi Goldberg) walks in on her boyfriend shooting a man and subsequently must be placed in the witness protection programme. She is put in the last place anybody would ever look for her...a nunery! At first she hates it but eventually makles friends with some of the eccentric nuns and leads them in singing (with her jazzed up hymns).
A great movie, light-hearted and makes you feel good and as always Whoopi is great and funny! One of my favourite movies. Very highly reccomended.

- I first saw this movie back when my grandmother bought it on VHS in '92. For the first few minutes, I knew I was going to love this movie. It has become one of my favorites since then. Whoopi plays Deloris Van Cartier, who is a Las Vegas lounge singer whose boyfriend is in the local mob. She walks in and sees him killing a previous employer who went to report him to the police. Deloris gets scared immediately, runs away from Vince's (Harvey Keitel) buddies who are told to "take care of it", meaning kill Deloris. She reports the incident to the police, and the lieutenant gets her into hiding for a short time until Vince goes to trial. Deloris is reluctant, but agrees to go. She is put in a place where Vince wouldn't even think she's at: a convent. She meets with the strict Reverend Mother (played by Maggie Smith), and has to adapt to the simple life of being a nun. She quickly befriends the rest of the sisters, and even manages to help get the convent out of alienation, as well as making the choir sing more beautifully (and even getting a very special visit from the Pope himself several days later). But shortly later on, Vince finds out of where Deloris is, because of some nosy detective, and the terror picks up where it left off. The lieutenant who put her in hiding now has to tell her that she has to leave because Vince knows of where she's at. She gets picked up by Vince's buddies and gets taken to a lounge and Vince is telling the boys to kill her. Deloris manages to get away from the men for a few minutes, and after a while, Vince and his boys are arrested and on their way to prison. Then, Mary Clarence and the rest of the sisters have their special concert at the church, with the Pope in attendance. After the concert, they all get a standing ovation, and the movie ends on a happy note. Filled with interesting scenes as well as great 60s soul music, this movie deserves to be in your personal library. Be sure to get the soundtrack album as well.
