1. The Mask of Zorro

Synopsis:
A sweeping romantic adventure of love and honor, tragedy and triumph set against Mexico's fight for independence. Twenty years have past since Don Diego de la Vega (Hopkins) fought oppression as the legendary hero, Zorro. Now he must find a successor and he chooses Alejandro Murietta (Banderas), a bandit with a troubled past who he must, somehow, transform into the fearless fighter he once had been. Then, armed with sword, whip, mask and the jet-black stallion, Tornado, the new Zorro must stop tyrant Raphael Montero, newly returned from Spain with a plot to actually buy California and enslave the populous to work in his mines. 'This is one crowd-pleaser that actually pleases!' -David Ansen, NEWSWEEK. 'Great fun. I loved it!' -Joel Siegel, GOOD MORNING AMERICA.

4. Penelope

Penelope is adorable, a sweet trifle, a great kid's movie, and not surprising, given its subject matter a film gay audiences will find familiar and comforting. That's because, more than anything, this is a story of acceptance of one's true self.

5. Legally Blondes

Legally Blondes is a really good movie. Granted it's not as good as the original Legally Blonde movie but hey it's still really good.

This movie is about Elle Woods twin cousins (Annabelle and Isabelle Woods) who come to town from the UK. Their father just got a teaching job in California. Elle Woods does NOT make an appearance in the film BUT she is talked about a lot in the film. In fact the twins and their dad stay in Elle Woods house and there are a lot of paintings of Elle Woods and Bruiser displayed in the house. The girls go to the same Prep school as Elle so they are well known by the principal and not well liked by her and some of their classmates. One of the girls gets accused of cheating (I think it is Isabelle) so Annabelle and their friends have to present a case and evidence to prove that Isabelle is innocent. Watch the movie to see if the girls and their friends can save the day.

There are some similarities about the Legally Blonde movies and the Legally Blondes movie. Elle, Annabelle, and Isabelle all love pink, they all have chihuahua's as pets (in fact Elle buys her cousins the dogs), and all three movies involve law type cases.

Legally Blondes is aimed towards kids and teens but I am a young adult and I found it to be a really good movie. It had a really good storyline and the acting was good as well.

6. Swept Away

“Swept Away” is a 1974 Italian movie directed by Lina Wertmuller. The 116 minute movie from Medusa Produzione is in Italian with English subtitles. The movie carries an R rating for nudity and language.

The movie “Swept Away” tells the story of two people Gennarino Carunchio (Giancarlo Gianni) and Raffaella Pavone Lanzetti (Mariangela Melato). Gennarino is a poor man who works on a yacht that has been hired by the very wealthy Lanzetti. When the movie begins Lanzetti seems to take great pleasure in complaining about everything. She talks nearly nonstop for the first half of the movie. Frankly I was looking for the mute button every time she spoke. When she was described by one of the men as the “biggest ball buster in the Mediterranean” I could see his point of view. Due to circumstances caused by Lanzetti’s demands and exacerbated by her stubbornness Gennarino and Lanzetti are stranded on a desert island in the Mediterranean. Once there Ginnarino decides he has had enough with her attitude and refuses to share his food and shelter with her until she works. Ultimately she succumbs to his violence and his demands and falls in love with him. When they are rescued the both reluctantly return to the lives they led before being shipwrecked however both want to abandon their former lives and return to the island.

When this movie was released it was very controversial because of the way Gennarino treated Lanzetti while on the island. Interestingly there didn’t seem to be much controversy about the way she acted and treated him. Essentially “Swept Away” is the same story as Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” with strong elements of “The Tempest” thrown in. It has never been, and never will be politically correct. However the movie is interesting and at times very sexy. I didn’t like either main character and if I were stranded with them on a desert island I’d probably kill them both.

If “Swept Away” had been directed by a man it would have been crucified. Since Lina Wertmuller is a woman the movie was made more palatable to some people. Wertmuller was the first woman nominated for a Best Director Oscar. She has strong political sensibilities. Her man characters are often socialists, communists, or anarchists.

“Swept Away” was okay, but not a great movie. I tried watching another of Wertmuller’s movies, “Seven Beauties” but found I couldn’t watch it and quit after a few minutes. I have to put “Swept Away” into the genre of Italian movies from the late 1950s and early 1960s that try to hard to be artistic and not hard enough to be an enjoyable movie.

7. Erin Brockovich + + +

An exhilarating tale about a woman discovering her full potential and running with it, "Erin Brockovich" is everything that "inspirational" true-life stories should be and rarely are. Vibrant and often quite funny in its account of how an unschooled, twice-divorced mother of three spearheads an investigation that leads to the largest payoff ever made in a direct-action lawsuit, this very satisfying picture takes Julia Roberts into more realistic performance territory than usual and should lead director Steven Soderbergh into an uncustomarily rarefied commercial realm. R rating and fact that this is not a pure escapist confection like most of the actress's films will undoubtedly result in somewhat lower than normal B.O. for Hollywood's biggest female star, but there is still more than enough heart and humor here to put "Erin" in the winner's circle, where the heroine ended up in life.
